Review: Astor Court at The St. Regis New York

The St. Regis tops my list of favorites places to have afternoon tea in New York. I've had afternoon tea there many times and it's always consistently great. This latest visit was no exception.

SETTING:
Astor Court sets the perfect tone for tea service. The elegant and ornate space is dedicated to afternoon tea from 3PM - 5PM with a harpist playing Wednesday - Sunday. The decor is lovely with cushy couches and chairs. It's such a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

SERVICE:
Excellent. It's formal yet not stuffy. Everything is paced wonderfully and a server is usually nearby if you need anything like hot water or more preserves for your scones.

TEA & TEA SELECTION:
Great selection of loose leaf teas from "T" Tea company (also served at The Ritz-Carlton). A little light on the white and oolong teas though. I had the Gyokuro Asahi green tea which was filtered twice – once through a yellow mesh fabric then through a traditional tea strainer.

SWEETS:

After the tea is served, they bring out a plate of savories. I love the savories served here – maybe not the most imaginative, but they're always good. Once, I asked for an extra plate of the tea sandwiches which I regretted since I was too full to have any sweets. Trusting their portion size was the valuable lesson I took away that day.

Freshly baked scones and two plates of assorted sweets arrive on a three-tiered stand after the finished plate of tea sandwiches is taken away. Double Devonshire cream, fruit preserves and lemon curd are served on the side for the scones.

The sweets are a good mix of tea cakes, tarts, and a chocolate mini cake. All tasty.

OVERALL:
I recommend St. Regis to anyone who asks me where they should go for tea. It's a solid experience with good food, tea and service all in a pretty and comfortable setting. It remains my top pick.

Note: If you really want to splurge, go for the caviar tea for two for ONLY $350 per person.
