Matcha Popsicles

I came up with the idea while drinking an iced matcha latte and thought, how great would this be if it was a popsicle? Good idea? Bad idea? No, GREAT idea.

First, I purchased a popsicle mold online. Second, went to a Japanese market and got a package of matcha (green tea) powder (similar here) and finally, to my local market for sweetened condensed milk. 

I started by making a matcha tea by adding three heaping teaspoons to a cup of hot water. Stir until all the clumps are gone. At this point, if you have a strainer, you can use that to pour the matcha tea into another container, to help break down the clumps further. I didn't use one, so I made sure I mixed well.

Next, add the condensed milk and some more water. The more condensed milk you add, the sweeter it'll get since it's basically milk and sugar. So add according to your taste. I added about six teaspoons of condensed milk to my matcha tea and added more water. I would suggest tasting the matcha mixture as you go. 

The mold used was a little difficult to work with but there are things you can do to make the process easier like waiting 90 minutes before putting in the popsicle sticks. In hindsight, I wish I had gotten this pop maker instead since it seems easier to work with (and makes popsicles in just 7 minutes).

I made them early in the afternoon and had them for dessert later that night. So good. 

Popsicle Mold: Progressive Freezer Pop Maker (comes with 50 popsicle sticks)
Condensed Milk: 14 oz Magnolia Sweetened Condensed Milk
Matcha: 1.4 oz Ito En Matcha (similar here)

Glad I met you at the session. You have a lovely blog. I will try this! I don't have pop makers like this or that great one you linked too. I did find a small plastic set awhile ago. I will give it a shot with those. I will let you know how it turns out. I have been wanting that Z pop set for awhile.. You take amazing pictures.

How is this popsicle mold? I've always had a hard time getting popsicles out of these things..

Camille, Haha, a matcha shake sounds great! I just made matcha yogurt by mixing greek yogurt with some matcha powder then added on a little honey. Delicious.

This sounds amazing. I need to try this at home.

Since its been awhile since you posted this, do you still recommend this pop set? Or has another taken your fancy? I'm planning to make these matcha pops since we bypassed spring and went right into summer here.

Hi Michele, I wish I had gotten the Zoku (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003U9ZCRO/?tag=ohhowcivilize-20) pop maker. I haven't personally used it, but it seems like it's easier to use than the Progressive Pop Maker used in the post.

Would this work as well if I used green tea leaves and then strained it? It seems that the powder sinks to the bottom, so would you recommend using actual leaves?

Hi Reynn, it won't taste the same with green tea leaves. Some matcha powder will sink to the bottom, but most should stay suspended in the milk. You can also try stirring the matcha and milk as it freezes.
