Le Palais des Thés

I first heard of Le Palais des Thés through a friend who moved, earlier this year, to Paris. She mentioned the French tea company was planning on opening shops in New York, so I kept an eye out. Just a few days ago, their small tea boutique opened up on the Upper West Side with a Soho shop set to open before the end of the year.

The tea shop walls are filled with tea of all kinds. Teas can be purchased loose in prepackaged tin canisters, pouches, or in tea bags.

LOVE that the tea bags here contain whole tea leaves, not broken tea bits like what’s in most bagged teas. It’s the reason I have a strong dislike for tea bags in general, knowing it’s just filled with small pieces of broken leaves which results in a poor quality tea. With that said, I was very happy to find these tea bags.

They have samples of their teas in little metal containers with white lids. Open them up to get a whiff.

The back walls are lined large canisters where they sell tea by weight, with a minimum of 3oz.

They carry a South Korea black tea, Jukro, which I was curious about, which at $130 for 3.5 oz is on the costly side. I did get a whiff from the large canister and it surprisingly had a nice chocolate scent. For higher premium teas like Jukro, the minimum is lower at 2oz.

The staff is super friendly so don’t be afraid of ask for suggestions.

I was just there yesterday, and bought both a loose tea and a box of tea bags.

Glad you discovered that place. I meant to mention it to you. They've had it in Slovenia for a few years now and I read just a few weeks ago that it was finally coming to NYC, which struck me as so backwards!

By the way, I wanted to tell you about this place G and I snacked in HK – http://www.paullafayet.com
    I think you'd love it!

  • Hi Karen, I think the tea bags are great to have at work.

Hi Philistina, ha, good for Slovenia! Thanks for the link, the next time (and first) I'm in HK, I'll have to check it out!

This looks right up my alley. I'm heading there next trip to the city. Thanks for posting the photos. I love the way the tea bags look. Very reassuringly fresh with leaves!!

Michele, they always have a sample tea for the day right by the entrance so you can sip while browsing.
