Matthew Langley’s Exhibition at BLANK SPACE Art Gallery

Nana, the owner of BLANK SPACE art gallery in Chelsea, New York, is a grad school friend of mine and is also my personal art consultant. She was key in helping me purchase my first, and definitely not last, commissioned piece from Suzy Kim. It was through Nana that I got a chance to be introduced to Suzy’s work.

Another artist whose work I found through Nana is Matthew Langley, who has a solo exhibition opening tonight at the gallery. From 6:00PM – 8:00PM, stop by and get an up close look at his work between sips of wine. I got a preview of the show. Take a look.

BLANK SPACE is located in the heart of Chelsea’s art district on 511 West 25th Street, right by the High Line. Once you get to the white building, open the glass doors and make a right to take the elevator to the second floor. Once there, walk down the hallway and at the left of the hall is the gallery.

Walk right inside and be greeted with Matthew Langley’s latest work.

The photos really don’t do the paintings justice. You really have to see them in person to see the texture created by layers of paint. I love all of them, but if I had to choose my favorite, I’d go with the large oil on canvas painting with the strip of dark orange at the bottom. (It’s the one hanging on the back wall in the photos.) ALL CAPS GORGEOUS.

When I visited, Nana gave me a personal tour of the exhibition and gave me background on the artist and his process. This personal tour of any show at the gallery is open to anyone interested in finding out more about the works displayed. You don’t have to feel like you have to buy anything to get the personal tour. It’ll last about 15 minutes and it’s free to all. Just give them a call or email to make an appointment or just drop in during the week and ask for one.

If you are interested in purchasing a piece, but are unsure of exactly what you’re looking for, you can request a free private viewing. Nana will walk you through and help to figure out what would work for your space with what she has in the gallery’s entire collection, an inventory from previous shows. This is great especially if you are a first-time collector. Think of her as an art stylist. She can let you know what artworks will work well with your space.

The gallery’s collection ranges from $800 – $2000 for smaller pieces and $20,000 – $30,000 for larger works.

One thing Nana stressed was that you shouldn’t be intimidated by art galleries since all artists would love for you to see their work. I have to remember that the next time I’m hesitant to walk inside a gallery. Another thing she mentioned was that you should always read the artist’s statement since it’ll give a much deeper understanding of their work.

With that in mind, after you visit BLANK SPACE tonight, pop into all the other galleries having exhibition openings since they usually happen Thursday nights.

Matthew’s show is open until November 10th.
