Peanut Butter and Jelly tea Sandwiches
Nothing is more classic than peanut butter and jelly when it comes to sandwiches. I made a mini version that’s perfect for children’s tea time.

Tea Sandwich basics
- Tea sandwiches are also known as finger sandwiches since you eat them with your hands.
- They’re the first of three courses of an afternoon tea.
- Should be sized to be eaten in 2-3 bites.
- Tea sandwiches aren’t just for tea time, they make great appetizers for parties.
Peanut Butter Tea Sandwich Ingredients
- Creamy peanut butter
Creamy is much easier to work with than crunchy since it’s smoother.
- Strawberry jam
Jam is thicker than jelly so it holds its shape without oozing out.
- White sandwich bread or very thin white bread
How to Make Peanut Butter and Jelly Tea Sandwiches
STEP 1: FILL SANDWICH BAGS WITH FILLINGS
It gets super messy when you’re trying to spread peanut butter and jelly onto little circles of bread so my trick is to use a makeshift piping bag using plastic sandwich bags.
Each sandwich bag should hold a sandwich filling. Peanut butter in one, and jam in the other.
Use a spoon and fill a corner of the sandwich bag with peanut butter or jam.
Snip, snip! Make a small cut at the corner where the filling can come out. I first make a small cut, see how much comes out, and then make another cut if I want the hole to be bigger.
Twist the open end of the sandwich bag for better control when squeezing out the filling.
STEP 2: CUT CIRCLES OUT OF THE BREAD
I have a round cookie cutter set so that I can use the right size to cut out two circles from each slice of bread.
Avoid the crust since we’re making a crustless sandwich.
STEP 3: ASSEMBLE THE TEA SANDWICH
From the bottom up: Bread, peanut butter, bread, jam, bread.
Start with bread as the base layer and pipe on peanut butter.
Don’t pipe to the edge of the bread since once we put another slice of bread on top, it’ll spread out. We don’t want the filling to ooze out and make a mess.
Top with a bread circle and push down slightly until the peanut butter spreads out without going all the way to the edge.
Squeeze on strawberry jam on top, again, avoiding the edges.
Top with the last layer of bread and done!
TEA SANDWICH TIPS
- Frozen bread cuts more neatly and cleanly than room temperature bread.
- Make 3-4 tea sandwiches per person.
- I’m using creamy peanut butter since it spreads easier than chunky or natural peanut butter.
QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE
Peanut butter can be replaced with any spreadable nut butter.
Strawberry jam can be replaced with any jam or jelly flavor.
All tea sandwiches are best made the morning of. You can make them the night before and cover with wax paper then a damp paper towel in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This will keep the bread from drying out too much.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Tea Sandwiches
- Fill sandwich bags with fillings.Use one sandwich bag for each filling. Spoon fillings into corners of sandwich bag and snip a tiny corner to create a piping bag.
- Cut circles out of the bread.Use a cookie cutter to cut out 2 circles from each slice of bread. Cut 12 bread circles in total.
- Assemble the tea sandwich.From the bottom up: Bread, peanut butter, bread, jam, bread.Start with the bread as the base layer and pipe on about 1/2 teaspoon of peanut butter. Top with bread and press down slightly, not letting the peanut butter go past the edge of the bread.Pipe on about 1/2 teaspoon of jam and top with another layer of bread.

Peanut butter can be substituted for any spreadable nut butter. Strawberry jam can also be replaced with any fruit jam of your choice. Serve with herbal tea (no caffeine) for kids.
