Starbucks Iced Matcha Latte

An iced matcha latte is a cold drink made of matcha powder, milk, sweetener, and ice. It’s a popular drink at Starbucks, where a pre-sweetened matcha blend is used.

Since the Starbucks matcha blend already has sweetener, you can’t order it unsweetened.

By making it yourself, you can better control the sweetness by using regular matcha and simple syrup.

Recipe Highlights

  • Iced Matcha Tea Latte at Starbucks is a green tea drink made with their matcha blend, ice, and 2% milk. The matcha blend, made specifically for Starbucks, is sugar and ground Japanese green tea.
  • This copycat recipe doesn’t use a matcha blend, which is sweetened matcha, since none of the sweetened matcha tested matched the Starbucks version. Instead, regular matcha and simple syrup is used, just like how it’s made in Starbucks in Canada, where they don’t use sweetened matcha.
  • This recipe makes a 16 ounce (grande size) cup of Iced Matcha Latte.

Ingredient Notes

Starbucks Iced Matcha Latte copycat ingredients.
  • Matcha: Matcha is a powered green tea that is packed with antioxidants. The brighter the green, the better the quality.
  • Simple syrup: The best way to sweeten cold drinks is with a simple syrup, which is sugar dissolved in water. Use store-bought or homemade simple syrup.
  • 2% Milk: Starbucks makes the drink with 2% milk but you can use any milk you like.
  • Ice: Use filtered water to make ice if possible.

Expert Tips

  • Instead of using regular, unsweetened matcha and simple syrup, you can use sweetened matcha but the color will be a pale green and the matcha taste will be less pronounced. The sweetened matcha will dissolve completely, leaving no clumps of matcha.
  • Regular matcha will create tiny little bits of green floating in the drink but if you want less clumps, use a mesh strainer to sift the matcha powder into the cocktail shaker before shaking.
  • No cocktail shaker? Use a jar with a tight lid.
  • To customize this drink at home, use vanilla syrup, instead of plain simple syrup, and vanilla sweet cream cold foam.

Matcha is just ground green tea and sweetened matcha is ground green tea mixed with sugar.

Why wasn’t sweetened matcha used in this recipe?
