Ingredients

Instructions

  • Put all ingredients in a saucepan and simmer.
Stir to make sure sugar dissolves completely.
  • Take off heat and steep for 5 minutes.
  • Strain and pour syrup into an airtight container.
Use a mesh strainer to separate the hibiscus solids from the syrup. The syrup will keep for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Dried loose hibiscus or hibiscus tea bags will both work. Loose hibiscus is higher quality since it has bigger hibiscus pieces.
  • White granulated sugar will give the syrup a vibrant red color. Brown sugar can also be used but the syrup will be brown in color instead of red.
  • Hibiscus tea bags is a much easier way to make this syrup since the tea bags can be thrown out. Straining hibiscus can create a mess if you're not careful.
  • Hibiscus tea stains easily so make sure to wipe away any messes as you go.
  • This recipe makes one cup (16 tablespoons) of hibiscus syrup, which is enough to add 2 tablespoons of the syrup to flavor and sweeten about 8 drinks.
  • Stored in an airtight container, this syrup will keep for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.

Syrup Uses

  • Make hibiscus iced tea by adding syrup to iced black or green tea.
  • Add hibiscus syrup in sparkling water to make hibiscus flavored soda.
  • Pour syrup in steamed or warm milk to make a hibiscus tea latte.
  • Add syrup to hibiscus tea to boost the hibiscus flavor.
