Ingredients

Instructions

  • Put all ingredients in a saucepan and simmer for 5 minutes.
Stir to make sure sugar dissolves completely.
  • Turn off the heat and let cool.
  • Remove tea bag and pour syrup into an airtight container.
Use a funnel to help pour neatly into the bottle. The syrup will keep for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Part of the appeal of butterfly pea flower tea is its ability to change colors whenever its pH level shifts. Adding it to lemonade will turn your drink purple.
  • Using white sugar preserves the bright blue color. You can use brown sugar, but it will muddle the color.
  • When making simple syrups, tea bags create far less mess and makes it easy to strain.
  • This recipe makes 1 cup of syrup. That's enough to sweeten 8 drinks if you use 2 tablespoons for each glass.

Syrup Uses

  • It's best in lemonade to make purple lemonade.
  • Make butterfly pea flower iced tea by adding this syrup to black or green iced tea.
  • Butterfly pea flower cold foam can be made using this syrup.
  • Add sparkling water to butterfly pea flower syrup to make a flavored soda.
  • Butterfly pea flower syrup can be used to sweeten cocktails.
