Liquid Cane Sugar Syrup

One of the syrups you can request to sweeten a drink at Starbucks is liquid cane sugar. The liquid cane sugar syrup is a pourable sweetener made with sugar, turbinado sugar, and water. The turbinado cane sugar is what gives the syrup a brown color and a light molasses flavor.

There’s also the classic syrup at Starbucks which is a basic simple syrup that’s just sugar and water and doesn’t contain turbinado sugar.

This copycat recipe yields a full bottle of syrup that can be mixed into any of your favorite drinks. The syrup can go into hot or cold beverages, but is especially good for iced since regular sugar is harder to dissolve and will just sink to the bottom of the cup.

Note from Jee

The best way to sweeten iced drinks is with a simple syrup. It’ll mix so much easier into a cold drink than just sugar.

I like this simple syrup better than regular simple syrup since the flavor is a little more complex due to the turbinado cane sugar.

Expert Tips

  • To sweeten a drink with liquid cane sugar syrup, add 1 to 2 tablespoons into an 8 ounce drink.
  • Liquid cane sugar can be used the same way as simple syrup. Add it to iced teas and iced coffees as a sweetener.
  • There’s no need to boil the syrup and boiling will make the syrup thicker. Just let it come to a simmer and as soon as the sugar dissolves, you can turn off the heat. The sugar just needs to be fully dissolved in the water.
