What Is Chai?

Chai is a traditional drink from India. It’s made of black tea, milk, and spices like cinnamon, cloves, and ginger.

In India, it’s known as masala chai. Masala means “spiced” and chai means “tea” in Hindi.

People call the drink “chai tea” in the U.S., but this is incorrect because the term translates to “tea tea.”

Recipe Highlights

  • A Starbucks recreation of the refreshing Iced Chai Tea Latte drink that’s quick and easy to make with just 3 ingredients.
  • The secret to making the drink taste exactly like the one at Starbucks is using Tazo chai concentrate.
  • Once you make this at home, you’ll wonder why you spent nearly $4 for a grande cup when you can make it for a fraction of the price.
  • Recipe makes a 16 ounce cup of iced chai latte, which is the exact size of a grande drink size.

Ingredient Notes

  • Tazo Classic Chai Latte: A black tea concentrate is made with cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and vanilla. This chai tastes exactly like the one at Starbucks.
  • Milk: Starbucks makes their iced chai latte with 2% milk but you can use any kind of milk you like, including oat and almond.
  • Ice: I like to use smaller ice cubes so that it chills the drink quicker, but not so small that they’ll completely water down the drink.

Expert Tips

  • The Tazo chai concentrate is sweetened so no need to add any extra sugar, but if you do want it sweeter, add simple syrup since it’ll mix in with the drink the best.
  • Not all chai concentrates are the same since every company makes their own chai blend using a range of different spices so stick with the Tazo brand if you want it to taste like the one at Starbucks.
  • You can add ice first, then the chai concentrate and the milk, but if you want it perfectly mixed without stirring, put the chai concentrate and milk in first, then the ice.
  • Starbucks uses 4 ingredients to make their Iced Chai Tea Latte in store: chai concentrate, water, milk, and ice. The chai concentrate used at Starbucks locations is made with less water so it’s a lot more concentrated and stronger than the packaged Tazo chai concentrate sold in stores. They add extra water to dilute the chai concentrate when making the drink at the store.
  • A delicious way to customize this drink is to add brown sugar syrup and swap 2% milk with oat milk. Top it off with Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam.

Questions You May Have

Is there caffeine in this drink?

Yes, there’s caffeine in black tea, which is used to make the chai concentrate.

What does iced chai tea latte taste like?

Because of the warming spices, you’ll get notes of cinnamon and cloves. The milk and sugar rounds out the flavor so it’s not too spicy.

What’s a dirty iced chai latte?

A drink is made dirty when espresso is added.

What does chai mean?

Chai translates to tea! So it’s actually wrong to say “chai tea” since you’re saying “tea tea.”

Thank you! I suspected Starbucks used Tazo brand chai tea, now I know for sure. Since the closest Starbucks is 45 minutes away (I live in the sticks) now I can enjoy the same flavor chai tea at home anytime I want.

    1. Hi! I used to work at Starbucks and it’s not tazo branded chai concentrate (it’s just Starbucks branded) but it does taste really similar! 🙂

  2. If you want to make iced chai tea your own and save use Bigelow Tea Bags (2 to be exact). Boil 1/4 c. add 2 two tea bags let seep for 5 min. Add 1 tsp. of sugar to hot tea mix. Pour over milk add lots of ice. DELICIOUS AND CHEAP.
