One of the easiest drinks to recreate, the homemade Starbucks Iced Matcha Latte is made with just 4 ingredients and takes just seconds.

Starbucks Iced Matcha Latte
Iced matcha latte is made with matcha, milk, sweetener, and ice. It’s a popular drink at Starbucks and for years pre-sweetened matcha was used but they now use regular matcha and classic syrup.
Note from Jee

One of the many things I learned over the years learning about matcha was that matcha doesn’t dissolve, it suspends in water.
Matcha is tea leaves that have been ground into a powder. It’s whisked to create a suspension of the powdered tea leaves in the water. Because you’re drinking the entire leaf, instead of just steeping it, there’s way more caffeine than regular tea.
I first tried making this drink with sweetened matcha but it just didn’t taste as good as using regular matcha and simple syrup. I got the exact recipe Starbucks uses, made it at home, and it tasted so good!
Recipe Summary
- This iced matcha latte recipe recreates the caffeinated tea drink, making it the same way Starbucks does.
- A cocktail shaker is used to combine all ingredients. If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, use a jar with a tight lid.
- This recipe makes a 16 ounce (grande size) cup of iced matcha latte.

Ingredient Notes

- Matcha: Matcha is a finely green tea. You don’t need to use the most expensive matcha for this drink. Look to spend around $30-$50.
- Simple syrup: Starbucks uses classic syrup but I used simple syrup, which is sugar dissolved in water. Use store-bought or homemade simple syrup.
- Milk: Starbucks uses 2% milk but you can use any milk you like. Oat milk is a popular alternative.
- Ice: Use filtered water to make ice if possible.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Put milk, simple syrup, and matcha into a cocktail shaker. Shake vigerously.

Step 2: Pour matcha latte into a cup with ice.
Expert Tips
- Instead of using unsweetened matcha and simple syrup, you can use sweetened matcha but the color will be a pale green and the matcha taste will be less pronounced.
- Matcha will create tiny little bits of green floating in the drink but if you want less clumps, use a mesh strainer to sift the matcha powder into the cocktail shaker before shaking.
- No cocktail shaker? Use a jar with a tight lid.

can i just shake the dairy since i don’t have a french press?
Yes! Use a large jar with a tight lid and shake all the ingredients, except for the ice, for a couple of minutes to get frothy matcha latte.
I just had an Iced Chocolate Matcha Latte at a tea shop. Soooo delicious. I looked at the package of Chocolate Matcha and it was $30 and the first ingredient was sugar. I decided that was a lot of money for sugar, especially when I have matcha at home. So using the principles I’ve learned from you, I made a chocolate syrup, using cocoa, sugar and water with a pinch of salt and vanilla, and will try my hand at it tomorrow.
Literally cannot tell the difference between the two, thanks for make this!! Best matcha ever.
I prefer the hot version of this (even in summer). Have you tried this with hot milk and no ice?
Hi Lisa, yup, I love the hot version too. Here’s my recipe: https://www.ohhowcivilized.com/matcha-latte/
