Strawberry Green Tea Lemonade

This Strawberry Green Tea Lemonade is a colorful and refreshing cold drink. The pretty layers make it the perfect beverage for summer parties, barbecues, and bridal showers.

It’s a balanced drink that’s fruity, tart, and refreshing thanks to its unique combination of ingredients.

The recipe is a fruity twist on an Arnold Palmer, the classic half-tea, half-lemonade drink. A homemade strawberry syrup sweetens the drink and adds a bright berry flavor.

Note from Jee

As a Tea Sommelier, one of the most common mistakes I see with green tea is steeping it for too long or in water that’s too hot.

Green tea is pretty delicate and fickle, so if you don’t want bitter green tea, make sure you don’t use boiling hot water and don’t steep it longer than 3 minutes.

Recipe Summary

  • This layered tea lemonade is a cold drink made with green tea, strawberry syrup, lemonade, water, and ice.
  • Since the strawberry syrup and lemonade are already both sweet, there’s no need for additional sugar.
  • The drink is caffeinated since it contains green tea.
  • This recipe makes 16 ounces (2 cups) but can easily be increased to make a pitcher.

Ingredients for Strawberry Green Tea Lemonade measured in cups.
  • Green tea: This recipe works with any green tea. Use a tea bag or tea sachet for easy cleanup.
  • Strawberry syrup: I like it with my homemade strawberry syrup for the best berry flavor, but store-bought works great, too.
  • Lemonade: Use your favorite store-bought lemonade or make it from scratch. I’m a big fan of the lemonade at Trader Joe’s, which is what I used.
  • Water: For the best tasting drink, always use filtered water.
  • Ice: Make ice with filtered water, if possible.

Recipe Notes

To make layers, start with the sweetest ingredient.

The trick to making a layered drink is to start by adding the sweetest components first. In this recipe, that’s the lemonade and strawberry syrup, which will sink to the bottom of the cup. Since the green tea is unsweetened, I added it last.

The more sugar the bottom layer has compared to the top, the more distinct the layers will be.

Don’t oversteep the tea.

Never brew green tea for more than 4 minutes. Brewing green tea for too long will make it bitter. Like all teas, green tea has a specific steeping temperature and time that should be followed to ensure the best smooth flavor.

Make the tea and syrup ahead of time.

Both the green tea and strawberry syrup can be prepared in advance and stored in the fridge. The tea will be good for up to 4 days, while the homemade strawberry syrup can last up to 2 weeks if kept in an airtight container.

Make it kid-friendly and caffeine-free.

Take out the green tea and make it a caffeine-free Strawberry Lemonade! Kids will love it since it’s sweet and refreshing.

Expert Tips

  • Store-bought lemonade is great, but a homemade one offers more control over the sugar levels if you prefer a drink that’s less sweet.
  • Swap the green tea with matcha to make it an Strawberry Matcha Lemonade.
  • To garnish with lemons, line the slices inside the cup first, then add the ice.
  • Leftover strawberry syrup can be used to make other recipes like Strawberry Iced Tea, Strawberry Bubble Tea, and Strawberry Cold Foam.
