Tea Sommelier’s Notes

Don’t use boiling hot water to make the tea.

My trick to getting perfect green tea for this drink is to use water that’s not boiling hot since green tea can easily get bitter if the water is too hot.

Plus, the tea will cool down faster if it’s not very hot.

Don’t oversteep the tea.

Keep a timer on your phone handy to make sure the tea isn’t steeping for too long, which can make the green tea bitter.

The general rule of thumb is to steep green tea for 2-4 minutes at the most.

Any tea can be used.

Instead of green tea, feel free to swap it with a black tea or an oolong tea if that’s what you have. It’ll still taste great.

Make the pineapple iced tea ahead of time.

Pineapple iced tea can be made in advance and stored in fridge for up to 3 days.

This recipe is for a single 16 ounce serving, but you can double it or make a large pitcher by increasing the ingredients.

Expert Tips

  • Add a flavored simple syrup like strawberry or ginger for additional flavor. Just note that this will increase the sweetness.
  • It’s best to drink it right away as the ice may dilute the iced tea.
  • If using loose green tea leaves, strain before mixing with the juice.
  • Garnish with fresh herbs like mint or basil.

Questions You May Have

Can I use bottled pineapple juice?

Fresh, canned, or bottled pineapple juice can be used but make sure there is no or minimal sugar to keep the drink from being overly sweet.

Can I use black tea instead of green tea?

You can use black tea but the drink’s flavor profile will change. Black tea will require a slightly longer steep time at 5 minutes.

Is drinking pineapple iced tea healthy?

Pineapple juice contains vitamins and antioxidants that are good for you. Since it is mixed with green tea, this is a caffeinated drink, so it is best to consume in moderation, especially if you are sensitive to caffeine.
