Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London

There are 2 Mandarin Oriental hotels in London and only one, the Hyde Park location, serves afternoon tea. Tea service is in the Rosebery, the restaurant inside the hotel on the main floor.

Note from Jee

I’ve gone to the Mandarin Oriental in New York and Paris and each one has a different take on afternoon tea, but the one in London is the best out of the other Mandarin Orientals.

London is the home of afternoon tea and it shows, with the careful details and delicious (and unlimited) food and tea.

How Afternoon Tea Works at Mandarin Oriental London

There’s just one afternoon tea at the Mandarin Oriental London and all the food shown is what you get. But you do need to pick the tea. They have an extensive tea list of 29 teas, some with additional cost. (By the way, I hate it when afternoon teas add those supplements.)

Since tea (and the food) is unlimited, you can select more than one tea from the menu. You can pick a tea to go with each course if you like.

The tea will come out first, then the food. There are 3 courses in afternoon tea and you start with the tea sandwiches, then the scones, and finally the sweets.

Setting: ★★★★★

The Rosebery consists of 2 rooms and the best seats by the giant windows are reserved for guests of the penthouse suites, all day, every day. The restaurant has a relaxed vibe with comfortable seating so it doesn’t feel stuffy or too formal.

Service: ★★★★★

Service was excellent and friendly. No complaints.

Tea & Tea Selection: ★★★★☆

With 29 teas on the tea menu, it’s a little overwhelming but I really liked the selection, especially the Sticky Rice white tea I had. What I didn’t like was the supplemental cost for some teas. I don’t like it when afternoon teas nickel and dime when you’re already paying for a premium for tea service.

Savories: ★★★★★

Almost all the tea sandwiches I’ve had in London have been exceptional. All made with freshly baked homemade bread, the sandwiches were pillowy soft and delicious.

Each person gets a plate with 4 sandwiches. They also bring out a smaller plate that holds 2 more savories per person.

Scones: ★★★★★

After the tea sandwiches are eaten, a bird cage-shaped cake stand is brought out and hooked to a metal branch stand holder that’s next to each table. The 2-tiered stand had scones on the top tier and clotted cream, jam, and lemon curd on the bottom tier. I love when afternoon teas have different tiered stands to present the food.

Sweets: ★★★★★

When they brought out the hanging cake stand, they also brought out a tray of sweets. A nice assortment and tasty.

After the pastries, the final touch was a clotted cream ice cream popsicle. I went during the week Wimbledon, so they added a cute chocolate button celebrating the occasion.

Overall: ★★★★★

I loved the experience and I think you will too.

  1. I so enjoy reading these afternoon teas you go too. Tell us what tea you choose in the next blog entry would you?
How about what’s in the sandwiches? oops, savories. Those sweets at the Ritz Carlton looked so much bigger and better than these at the Mandarin Oriental.
How I would love it if you sold a set of teas for sampling. Which tea goes with what? What am I looking for taste-wise to go with the taste of ___?
I’d also love to see you having a tea club. Even Harney & Sons could make packets up that you recommend.
Avoiding NYC, having afternoon teas at major cities.
