Hong Kong Sprite Iced Tea

When I saw this drink with tea was going viral, of course I had to try it. It’s a cold brewed tea in a Sprite bottle with fresh lemon juice. The idea is so simple and so good. The combination of sweet Sprite, malty black tea, and tart lemon is a winner.

Why just cold brew tea in water when you can cold brew tea in soda?

You don’t need loose tea or a separate container to cold brew. You just shove tea bags into the soda bottle and after a couple of hours, it’s done!

Note from Jee

I tried making 8 different combinations of sodas and teas and there were 3 clear winners: The original Hong Kong Sprite Iced Tea, a ginger ale and hibiscus, and Sprite with Earl Grey tea. I’ll share all the recipes below.

The biggest surprise was the ginger ale and hibiscus, which simply tasted like hibiscus candy. It was amazingly good. I also made Sprite and hibiscus but the ginger ale was the standout.

Recipe Notes

Don’t skip on the lemon.
I first made the original Hong Kong Sprite Iced Tea without lemon and didn’t understand the hype but after adding it, completely understood why it went viral. The lemon is a MUST. It took the drink from ok to amazing.

Use tea bags.
This is one of those recipes where a tea bag wins over tea sachets or loose tea. In order to extract as much flavor from the tea as possible, you need tea that’s broken up into tiny little pieces, which is what’s in a tea bag.

Use any black tea.
I used English breakfast tea but you can use Lipton tea bags or any black tea bag.

Put the soda bottle upside down in a cup.
The tea bags need to be submerged in the soda, which is why it’s placed upside down. There were small leaks from a couple of the bottles when they were in the refrigerator upside down since it was hard to close completely with the tea bag strings hanging out. The cup will not only hold the bottle in place upside down, it’ll also catch any leaks.

Viral Hong Kong Sprite Iced Tea

By: Jee Choe, Tea Sommelier
Cold brew tea bags in soda to create a delicious and refreshing drink.
Prep Time: 3 minutes
Total Time: 2 hours 3 minutes
Yield: 1 serving (16 ounces)

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle Sprite (16.9 ounce), or any lemon-lime soda
  • 2 tea bags black tea
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  • Pour out a little bit of Sprite from the bottle to allow room for the tea bags. Place 2 tea bags into the bottle.
The soda will fizz and can bubble over if some of it isn't poured out.
  • Screw the cap back on, making sure it's on tight. Flip the bottle upside down and place it in a cup.
The cup will catch any leaks and will hold the bottle in place upside down.
  • Put the soda in the cup in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours.
  • To assemble the drink, pour the tea into a cup with ice. Squeeze fresh lemon juice on top.

Notes

Here are 2 more soda + tea combinations that worked really well together:
Ginger Ale + Hibiscus Tea: Put 2 hibiscus tea bags into a bottle of ginger ale. Place it in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours. Remove tea bags and pour the drink into a cup with ice. This was SO GOOD.
Sprite + Earl Grey: Put 2 Earl Grey tea bags into a bottle of Sprite. Place it in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours. Remove tea bags and pour the drink into a cup with ice. This has a citrus flavor from the bergamot so no need to add lemon juice.
