Sketch

Sketch is a restaurant inside a converted townhouse in London that has multiple dining rooms and the afternoon tea is served inside The Gallery. There is also a fine dining space called The Lecture Room and Library that holds three Michelin stars.

Note from Jee

I’ve wanted to have afternoon tea at Sketch for as long as I can remember. And it was so worth it! The experience wasn’t perfect, but it was incredibly memorable.

It’s ranked number 2 on my list of afternoon teas in London, which basically means it’s one of the best afternoon teas in the world in my book.

Reservations

A reservation for Sketch is a must, for up to 6 people, so book far in advance as possible. I made my reservation through their site, making sure to select The Gallery and for afternoon tea.

Dress Code

They have their dress code as ‘Art Smart,’ which is to “dress with a sense of style and character, as one would when visiting an art gallery.”Sportswear, bathing suits, and immodest clothing is not permitted and they have the right to refuse entry if they think you are not within dress code.

Afternoon Tea Hours

Afternoon tea is served every day. From Monday to Thursday, afternoon tea is served 12PM – 4PM. On Fridays, it’s from 11AM – 4:30PM, on Saturdays, 11AM – 5PM, and Sundays from 11AM – 4:30PM.

How Afternoon Tea Works at Sketch

There is just one afternoon tea on the menu, which lists all the food that will arrive on a tiered tray. You don’t pick the food but you do need to select a tea. There is a tea menu you can browse. Since the food and tea is unlimited, feel free to try more than one tea.

The tea will come out firs in a teapot. They bring out an extra teapot per person that just has hot water so you can refill your teapot for more tea. The savories come out next on it’s own plate and once you finish eating them all, they’ll take the plates away and bring out a 2-tiered tray with sweets on top and scones on the bottom. Clotted cream and jam will be placed on the table to have with the scones.

Eat the scones first, then the sweets.

Afternoon Tea Menu

Afternoon Tea
£85 per person (approximately $115)
Pot of tea, 5 tea sandwiches, 5 sweets, and 2 scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserves. Food and tea is unlimited.

The menu and prices may change at any time.

Setting: ★★★★★

I love dining spaces that are reserved just for afternoon tea since it creates an intimate and luxurious experience. The Gallery ONLY serves afternoon tea until dinnertime. Everyone there seated is there just for tea time.

To make the experience even better, they have a live string trio playing while you enjoy your tea. The decor is so pretty too, adding to the luxe feel. Sketch was well-known for their cotton candy pink dining room, but they had a redecorated and the room is now yellow and gold.

Service: ★★★★☆

The service was what made it a less-than-perfect experience for me. It was amazing except for one instance. When we were waiting for the check, the hostess came over and told us we needed to pay and leave since we were going to exceed our 2 hour limit.

I was definitely annoyed since she was a bit rude, especially since I had already asked for the bill. BUT, the rest of the service was excellent, so I’m going to forgive it, but not forget it.

A note that the servers all wear uniforms, that match the color scheme of the space, which added a lovely touch.

Tea & Tea Selection: ★★★★★

The tea and tea selection were excellent. The tea menu isn’t overwhelming yet had a good number of teas. They serve loose tea with strainers. The tea is unlimited so I tried 2 different teas. I find ordering 3 teas to be excessive since they bring out a whole pot, so I like to stick to 2 teas.

Savories: ★★★★★

WOW. The tea sandwiches were SO GOOD. I LOVED them all. You get 5 tea sandwiches on a plate and they recommend eating from left to right. Look how pretty they look!

Out of all the savories I had in London afternoon teas, Sketch had the best. Super flavorful with each bite a delight. They go beyond the basics with the flavor combinations.

Scones: ★★★★☆

The scones are really cute and miniature in size (which I actually like) and you get 2 per person. I didn’t love the scones though and found them to be a bit dry and lacking in flavor.

Sweets: ★★★★★

All the attention to detail is evident in the sweets too. Adorable and delicious. Each one was unique and so good.

The bathroom at Sketch is so unique. It looks like you entered a spaceship and each of those pods is a stall.

Overall: ★★★★★

Even with the hiccup with the service and not loving the scones, the savories and service leading up to the end were exceptional. I would definitely go back and consider this a must-try.
