Ginger Shots

A ginger shot is a concentrated drink made of fresh ginger, lemon juice, and coconut water. It’s a small drink, so it’s meant to be taken in one gulp, or a couple of sips. Because it’s so concentrated, it has a strong and intense flavor.

Note from Jee

If you have extra ginger on hand and not sure what to do with them, this is an easy recipe that you can whip up in a couple of minutes using a blender.

If you’re wary of the intensity of the drink, add more apple to make it naturally sweeter.

Recipe Summary

Step 4: Pour into a shot glass and drink right away.

Recipe Notes

Slice the ginger into cubes.

To extract the most flavor, cut the ginger into small pieces or cubes. The pieces should be about half the size of your thumb. If you’re using a less powerful blender, it’s better to cut it into even smaller pieces.

Load the liquids first.

When blending any type of drink, always add the liquid ingredients first. In this recipe, starting with the coconut water and lemon juice will prevent air pockets and create an even blend.

Increase the speed.

Since there’s more hard ingredients than liquid, it’s important to gradually increase the speed. Blend on low speed first. Once the blades have chopped up the ginger and apple, you can increase the speed to high. Don’t leave it on low speed the whole time since it can overheat the blender.

Expert Tips

  • Cold water can be used instead of coconut water, but it might not be as refreshing.
  • If you don’t have apple, use a splash of apple juice for sweetness. You can also use some date syrup or honey.
  • If you want a less spicy ginger shot, use more apple and less ginger. You can also leave out the cayenne pepper.
  • Ginger shots are best taken fresh. If you need to save it, store in an airtight jar in the refrigerator and drink within 2 days. Or, freeze any left over ginger shots in ice cube trays.
