Cold Brew Tea Concentrate

I make cold brew tea concentrates all the time in the summer since I can get double to amount of tea without taking up extra space in the refrigerator. A tea concentrate is a strong, potent brew made to be watered down. I make my tea concentrates with double the amount of hibiscus to water. Instead of 1 ½ teaspoons of tea, I’m using 1 tablespoon of tea in a cup of water.

I use tea concentrates for drinks like tea lattes, iced tea lemonades, or any drink where I’m adding something to the tea but still want the taste of the tea.

Note from Jee

I love using Weck jars as cups. I look for ones that hold between 10-20 ounces. The ones in the photo I took are sold out but these are similar.

Make individual portions in the glass jars and pop on the lid and put them in big ice buckets filled with ice. They’re perfect for parties or picnics.

One note that if you add the sliced limes, they can make the drink bitter so don’t store them with the limes in the refrigerator if you’re not going to drink it the same day.

Recipe Notes

You can use loose tea, tea bags, or tea sachets.
I’m using loose hibiscus tea, but feel free to use any hibiscus tea you like, including ones in tea bags or sachets.

Hibiscus goes well with lemonade and ginger beer.
I used sparkling limeade but this drink also tastes great when it’s made with lemonade or ginger beer.

Drink cold brew tea within 4 days.
Fruit-infused cold brew is best when consumed within 4 days since there’s increased risk of bacterial growth since there aren’t any preservatives. From the day you put the cold brew tea into the refrigerator to the day you have your last sip, it should be 4 days total.

Strain out solids after 24 hours.
Make sure to strain out the hibiscus after 24 hours. Leaving any solids in the cold brew tea can speed bacterial growth.

Hibiscus Limade

By: Jee Choe, Tea Sommelier
A refreshing drink made with cold brew hibiscus tea concentrate and limeade. Perfect for picnics or by the pool.
Prep Time: 2 minutes
Total Time: 12 hours 2 minutes
Yield: 8 servings (8 ounces)

Ingredients

Cold Brew Hibiscus Tea Concentrate

  • 4 tablespoons hibiscus tea, (or 6 tea bags or sachets)
  • 4 cups water, cold or room temperature

Hibiscus Limeade

  • 3 ice cubes
  • 2 lime slices
  • cup cold brew hibiscus tea concentrate
  • ½ cup limeade

Instructions

  • Make the cold brew hibiscus tea concentrate first. Combine hibiscus tea with cold or room temperature water in a glass container.
  • Cover and refrigerator for 12-24 hours.
  • Use a strainer to remove all solids.
The hibiscus tea solids should not be left in the drink for more than 24 hours.
  • Assemble the drink by putting ice cubes and thinly sliced lime into a cup. Pour in the hibiscus tea concentrate and top with limeade.

Notes

  • If you like a sweeter drink, add more limeade than the tea concentrate.
  • This recipe works great with regular limeade or sparkling limeade.
