Start your day with this 3-ingredient iced protein coffee made with espresso. The easy recipe takes just 1 minute to prepare, making it perfect for busy mornings.

Proffee
An iced protein coffee (also called a proffee) is a cold coffee drink that contains protein. It’s an iced latte that uses a protein shake instead of milk. If you’re looking to increase your protein intake, start your day with a protein coffee!
The recipe is quick and easy because it uses a bottled protein shake. Mix it with espresso and ice, and you have yourself an iced protein latte.
Note from Jee

This drink tastes like an iced vanilla latte but has extra protein.
If you’re running around all day and need a quick and easy snack, instead of going for a candy bar, make this drink.
I did a side-by-side comparison between Fairlife and Premiere protein shakes and Fairlife won. Both vanilla protein shakes tasted like vanilla ice cream, but there was a slight aftertaste with Premiere.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Add ice to a glass. Pour the protein drink into the glass.

Step 2: Add the espresso. Top off with more ice, if needed. Enjoy right away.
Recipe Notes
Replace the espresso with instant coffee.
This drink can be made with instant coffee instead of espresso. For every 2 shots of espresso, use ¼ cup of water with 1 tablespoon of instant coffee.
Adjust the espresso.
Use 1 shot of espresso if you want a less caffeinated, or a less coffee tasting drink. For a stronger drink, use 3 shots. I tested this recipe with 3 shots and it tasted great too. The coffee taste wasn’t as strong as I thought it would be with the additional espresso.
Use protein powder and milk.
The bottled protein shake in this drink can be replaced with a homemade version. Simply mix a scoop of vanilla protein powder with 1 ½ cups (about 12 ounces) of milk in a blender or shaker bottle.
This option lets you use your favorite protein powder, but it’s less convenient than using a bottled shake.
Starbucks Tip
To make this drink at Starbucks, order an iced espresso with 2 or 3 espresso shots in a grande or venti cup with ice. Add a bottle of your favorite vanilla protein shake and stir to combine.
Expert Tips
- Another way to assemble the drink is to put espresso into a cup, add protein shake, then top with ice, reversing the order. Avoid adding ice first, then adding the espresso since the hot espresso will melt the ice too quickly, watering down the drink.
- Make the drink extra rich by adding cold foam.
- The espresso can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container. Use it within 2 days for the best quality.
