Espresso + Chocolate

An iced mocha is a cold chocolate flavored latte and this version has protein added, so it’s an iced protein mocha. It’s a delicious way to get more protein.

The protein and chocolate flavor come from a bottled protein shake, so it’s easy to make. Just combine the shake with espresso and ice, and you’re done.

Note from Jee

I tested this recipe using Fairlife and Premier protein shakes. Overall, I liked Fairlife better. They tasted pretty much the same, but the Premiere shake had more of an aftertaste.

This recipe is barely a recipe since it’s so easy to make. Start your morning with this tasty drink.

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients for an iced protein mocha on a gray background.
  • Chocolate protein shake: For a single iced mocha, you’ll need an 11-ounce bottle of chocolate protein shake. Chill the bottle first to make the drink more refreshing.
  • Espresso: Use a light or dark roast, depending on your preference. If you don’t have an espresso machine or Nespresso, use instant coffee.
  • Ice: If possible, use ice made with filtered water.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Pouring chocolate protein shake in a glass with ice.

Step 1: Add ice to a cup. Pour the protein shake into the cup.

Pouring espresso in a glass with chocolate protein shake and ice.

Step 2: Add the espresso and top with more ice, if needed. Drink immediately.

Recipe Notes

Use instant coffee instead of espresso.

If you don’t have a way to make espresso, use instant coffee. You’ll need ¼ cup of water and 1 tablespoon of instant coffee to replace 2 shots of espresso.

Ordering the drink at Starbucks.

Bring in your own bottled chocolate protein shake to Starbucks and order 2 espresso shots with ice in a venti cup. Once you get the cup, you can add the chocolate protein shake.

Replace the bottled shake with protein powder and milk.

A homemade protein shake can be used instead of a bottled version. To make it, combine 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder with 1 ½ cups (about 12 ounces) of milk in a blender or shaker bottle.

Expert Tips

  • If you want a less caffeinated drink, use 1 espresso shot. Use 3 shots for a stronger drink.
  • You can reverse the order of the ingredients. Add the espresso to the glass, then follow with protein shake and ice, in that order. Don’t add the hot espresso right after the ice, because it will quickly melt the ice.
  • Add cold foam for a richer drink.
