Cold Brew Chai Concentrate

I love cold brewing chai since the tea turns out super mellow and smooth. With this recipe, I made it a concentrate, which means there is higher ratio of tea leaves to water.

My chai concentrate is made using double the amount of chai loose tea in water to get it super flavorful and rich. Because the chai is double-strength, the flavor will come through even after adding ice, water or milk. The concentrate is perfect for making iced chai lattes where milk and ice is added.

Note from Jee

Every tea company makes their own blend of chai so no two will taste exactly the same.

For this recipe, I used a chai from Dishoom, a popular Indian restaurant based in London. I got it on my last trip to London and if you go, I highly recommend both the restaurant and their chai.

Recipe Notes

Use loose tea, tea sachets, or tea bags.
I used loose tea but you can use chai tea bags or tea sachets.

The more spices you can see, the better.
I’ve found that the more spices you can see in the chai, the more flavorful the drink will be.

Strain out solids after 24 hours.
Make sure you take it out all solids after 24 hours. Leaving any solids in the cold brew tea can accelerate bacterial growth.

Drink within 3 days.
Cold brew is best when consumed in 3 days after straining the solids since there is increased risk of bacterial growth. From the day you put the cold brew tea in the refrigerator to the day you have your last sip, it should be 4 days total.

Use filtered water.
I always recommend using filtered water to make tea.

Great for iced chai lattes.
Put chai concentrate into a cup with ice and add milk to taste.

Glass Containers

This cold brew chai recipe was formulated to fit perfectly inside this glass container.

You’ll need 2 containers of the same size with one for cold brewing, and another one to strain the drink into.
