Cold Brew Milk Tea

You may now about cold brewing tea in water, but have you ever tried cold brewing tea in milk? It’s the exact same method but instead of using water, you use milk.

I don’t use my usual fruit-infused formula of Tea + Fruit + Citrus + Herb for cold brewing with milk since citrus will curdle the milk. So, with milk, I usually keep it simple with just Tea + Milk.

Note from Jee

Not all tea works with milk, since milk can easily overpower any subtle tea notes. I recommend using strongly flavored black teas that can work with the tea like chai and Hot Cinnamon Spice. It also works great with an herbal like rooibos.

With Hot Cinnamon Spice tea, I used 1 teaspoon of tea for every cup of milk since I found the cinnamon flavor to be too overwhelming with my usual 1 ½ teaspoons of tea.

Recipe Notes

Use any kind of milk.
You can use any kind of milk you like, including plant-based like oat, soy, or almond.

Use loose tea, tea sachets, or tea bags.
I like using loose tea, but you can use tea bags or tea sachets.

Strain out solids before it gets to 24 hours.
Make sure you take it out all tea leaves after 24 hours. Leaving any solids in the cold brew tea can accelerate bacterial growth.

Drink within 2 days.
Cold brew milk tea is best when consumed in 2 days after straining the tea leaves since there is increased risk of bacterial growth. From the day you put the cold brew milk tea into the refrigerator to the day you have your last sip, it should be 3 days total.

Glass Containers

These tall glass containers are what I use for my cold brew milk teas. They hold half a liter, which is a little over 2 cups.

You’ll need at least 2 per cold brew milk tea. One will be for cold brewing and one will be what you strain the cold brew milk tea into.

Cold Brew Milk Tea

By: Jee Choe
See how easy it is to make an iced tea latte using just milk and tea.
Prep Time: 3 minutes
Total Time: 12 hours 3 minutes
Yield: 2 servings (16 ounces)

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons Hot Cinnamon Spice tea, (or 1 tablespoon flavored black tea)
  • 2 cups milk, (any kind)
  • 2 cups ice

Instructions

  • Combine tea and milk in a container. Cover and place in the refrigerator for 12 hours.
Stir or shake the container to make sure tea leaves are touching the water.
  • Use a strainer to remove all solids.
The tea leaves should not be left in the milk for more than 24 hours.
  • Pour milk tea into a cup with ice.
The milk tea can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Notes

  • If you’re using any other flavored black tea, go with 1 tablespoons of tea instead of the 2 teaspoons I used for Hot Cinnamon Spice.
  • You can use any kind of milk you like, including plant-based like oat, soy, or almond.
  • I like using loose tea, but you can use tea bags or tea sachets.
  • Tea leaves shouldn’t be left in the milk for than 24 hours. Leaving any solids in the cold brew tea can accelerate bacterial growth.
  • Cold brew milk tea is best when consumed in 2 days after straining the tea leaves since there is increased risk of bacterial growth. From the day you put the cold brew milk tea into the refrigerator to the day you have your last sip, it should be 3 days total.
