Caffeine in Starbucks Tea Drinks

Starbucks is mostly known for its extensive coffee menu but it also has dozens of tea options, both hot and iced. Tea-based drinks are made with either tea bags or with pre-made concentrates (chai) or powders (matcha).

The caffeine content can range quite a bit in their drinks, so it’s important to know what’s in your tea before ordering. A drink you expect to give you energy might not do anything while a tea you expect to help wind you down might keep you up all night!

Here’s a compiled list of every tea option at Starbucks, broken down by hot, iced, and Frappuccino, from the least to most caffeinated. All drinks are ranked by caffeine content in grande size (their standard size).

Caffeine in Hot Tea Drinks

Tea drinks can be broken into three parts: chai lattes, matcha lattes, and traditional tea offerings in tea sachets/bags. Chai lattes are made with a concentrate while matcha lattes are made with a powder.

Although you can’t get just straight matcha tea at Starbucks, you can get a chai tea, which is much different than a chai tea latte. A chai tea latte is made with a concentrate and served with milk while chai tea is a tea bag made up of black tea and spices.

For hot tea drinks, much of the caffeine content in a drink is determined by how many tea bags are used in a drink. Short and tall hot teas have one tea bag, and grande and venti drinks have two tea bags.

Caffeine in Iced Tea Drinks

There are a lot of similarities between the iced and hot tea menus. A good rule of thumb at Starbucks is that if you can order it hot, you can order it iced.

Iced tea drinks are brewed in batches, so their caffeine content is determined by the size of the drink, rather than the number of tea bags in each drink. It’s hard to develop a specific rule that ties the size of the drink to the caffeine content, so when in doubt, ask the barista.

Another thing to keep in mind with iced drinks is that their caffeine content is only an approximation. The amount of ice and the space you leave for milk and sugar (if you add either), can decrease the amount of caffeine in the drink. Assume that these estimates are on the higher end of caffeine content.

Caffeine-Free Drinks

Starbucks offers a wide range of non-caffeinated drinks in every category. There’s no one way to look at the menu and determine if a drink doesn’t have caffeine but there are some giveaways. White chocolate doesn’t have caffeine (unlike regular chocolate), so a hot chocolate with a white chocolate base is a good place to start.

Steamers are flavored steamed milk drinks so there’s no tea or coffee so they’re great options for kids or anyone sensitive to caffeine.
