Recipe Summary

  • I’m a Tea Sommelier and this recipe is from my hot brewed tea series on Instagram and TikTok.
  • The recipe is made using my hot tea formula I’ve developed over the years of recipe testing and tasting.
  • This hot tea can be made with English Breakfast tea but any other tea can be used.

Hot Tea Blend Formula

I have a hot tea formula I like to use when making my own hot tea blends. It’s 1 tea + 1 fruit + 1 spice or botanic.

To make this strawberry vanilla tea, I used English Breakfast tea as my tea, freeze-dried strawberries as my fruit, and vanilla bean as my spice.

In the colder months, I don’t like to use fresh fruit to make hot tea since they’re usually out of season, making it more expensive and not as flavorful. I use freeze-dried fruit or fruit juice instead.

Ingredient Notes

  • English Breakfast tea: Any black tea can be used so use whatever black tea you have available.
  • Freeze-dried strawberries: Get sliced freeze-dried strawberries. I got mine from Trader Joe’s.
  • Vanilla bean: You’ll need a 2″ piece of a whole vanilla bean. I also got this at Trader Joe’s.
  • Water: I always recommend using filtered water when making tea.

I like to make my tea teas as 16 ounce (2 cup) servings and this glass teapot is the one I use again and again.

I especially love the strainer lid that’s super easy to clean. This brand has a couple of sizes and I use the 720 ml size teapot.

Recipe Notes

Use loose tea, tea sachets, or tea bags.
I prefer using loose tea but you can use English breakfast tea bags or tea sachets.

Any tea can be used.
I used a black tea (English Breakfast tea) but you can use any kind of tea you like. The strawberry and vanilla flavors work really well with green tea, white tea, or oolong tea.

Use vanilla extract if you don’t have vanilla beans.
Replace the vanilla bean in the recipe with 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. When using vanilla extract, stir it in at the very end instead of letting it steep in hot water.

Cut the vanilla bean and scrape out the seeds.
To get the maximum flavor out the vanilla bean, make sure to expose the seeds by splitting open the bean and scraping out the seeds inside.

Strawberry Vanilla Tea

By: Jee Choe
A delicious and fruity hot brewed tea made with freeze-dried strawberries and English Breakfast tea.
Prep Time: 3 minutes
Total Time: 8 minutes
Yield: 1 serving (16 ounces)

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon English Breakfast tea, (or 2 tea bags/sachets)
  • 2 inch vanilla bean, (or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract)
  • ¼ cup freeze-dried strawberries
  • 2 cups water

Instructions

  • Boil water.
If using an electric kettle with temperature setting, set it between 208°F – 212°F. Filtered water is best.
  • Cut the vanilla bean in half lengthwise and scrape off the seeds inside.
Put the cut vanilla bean and the scraped seeds into a teapot.
  • Add tea and freeze-dried strawberries. Cover teapot and steep for 5 minutes.
Steeping for too long will make the tea bitter so it's best to set a timer.
  • Strain solids and pour hot tea into a cup.

Notes
